Hebei 2006 - Chinglish heaven, part V

"Lesser Panda" - Sigmund Freud would have known how to deal with that one.

The Chinese brand 小熊猫 xiao xiongmao actually means "Little Panda", according to the World Wildlife Fund the shown translation is still correct, though.

Update: I just learned that the "Lesser Panda" actually exists, being not only "lesser" but "redder" than the Giant Panda. I have found some pictures of the Ailurus fulgens online.

The lesser panda is another species, looks a bit like a red racoon and lives in the himalayas.
The picture shows small greater pandas

Lesser panda actually is correct name for red Panda (Ailurus fulgens ). Check wikipedia. However, the picture is still showing giant panda.

It was fun to read all these Chinglish collections. The author must have spent a lot of time capturing these God-knows signs. The Chinglish phenomena are definitely not limited to China. I noticed the blogger is a German native. Here is a photo I took during my stay in NH Hotel last year in Munich, Germany. The English translation is just as awkward as many spotted in China.

Lesser panda does exist. Its latin name is Ailurus fulgens and English name is Lesser Panda or Red Panda. It is categorised in Procyonidae same family with Norther American procyon lotor. The nornal panda we can see in the zoo or on TV are Giant Panda which belongs to Ailuropodidae. The picture shows baby Giant Pandas. Lesser Pandas are not in the same family with Giant Pandas although their families are very close and similar. Lesser Pandas and Giant pandas both eat banboo (not only banboo). In China, Giant Pandas are in the I class of in danger species and lesser pandas are in the II class, which means the quantity is greater than Giant Pandas. Lesser Panda (I more like to call them Red Pandas) are very meek and tidy and often kept as pets. The size is as big as a fat cat, usually 6kgs and 40-60cm.

Hi, olr,

Thank you for posting my message. I noticed somehow your blog doesn't support [img] tag and my picture link got truncated. Here is the German NH hotel guest feedback form again. Hope this time it shows the complete url.

Yes, we can learn a lesson from it.
When you laugh at others, you may found later that the one should be laughed at is yourself. Think again.

One authority Chinese dictionary says that.

If your native language is not English, you are always at disadvantage when you try to express yourself in English. That's all right as long as you have a sense of humor and enjoy your everyday to its fullest. I know I often misuse words and expressions. If they bring unintended pleasure to others, that will make me pleased as well.
