First contact.

To all my media colleagues,

I just want to apologize if I might not be reachable by phone that easily at the moment. I'm still right in the middle of settling down in Singapore with jetlag finally behind me. For all enquiries please use -- mail at olliradtke.de -- first and I'll get in touch with you as soon as possible (the time difference works for me).

Best,

olr.

Hello,

My name is Xiaolu, and I am a native chinese. This is my first time to log to your blog. I think that posting these pictures in your blog is not just for some jokes. On the contrary, your pictures brought a serious issue that a lot of people overlooked. That is, for those who are learning a secondary language (such as English) and trying to practice it, they need to respect the foreigh language and use it in the right way. Otherwise, it will not help the communication. Further, it may cause misunderstanding and unnecessary troubles.

However, I think that posting the pictures here is just a beginning. Importantly, it would be great if you may show the right way to say it besides those wrong signs. Only by this way, they may learn how to speak the right english and do not make the same mistake again. Then, your mission is fully accomplished!

Learning second languages is not easy. I learned english grammar in China for over 10 years. After I came to US, I still made a lots of mistakes when I communicate in English. The real situation in China is that few people has the opportunity to learn english for a native speaker. Therefore, the appearance of those chinglish is quite understandable. And it is nice of you to pay attention to this and try to change the situation.

I am not sure how many Chinglish in this little note:) Thanks again for your good intention.

Xiaolu

The article itself actually tries to put the Chinglish phenomenon in context, as a small window into China's 20-year liberalization.
