I am sorry, Peking University ...

... but what's the reason behind translating 创新 chuang4xin1 ("innovation") as "imagination"?

I am sure, when it comes to Operating Systems, your 2007 Imagination Festival keynote speaker does rely much more on the latter than the former, but do you really need to rub it in that bad?

source: Xinhua News

Seriously: If Asia's best university (according to the 2006 THES World University Rankings ) can't hire a translator, I don't know who will.

Really sorry.

Thanks go to blogger "Beyondword" for pointing this out to me.

poor PKU. but you made a mistake too, 'Beijing University' is not the formal English name of the university you denoted(I deduce this from Bill Gates's lecture), in fact it's Peking University, with Peking,an obsolete usage, meaning Beijing.

The meeting is the Imagine Cup held by Microsoft, so Imagination is a big part of Gates' speech. However, if you translate "imagination" to "想像", it is not a good way to translate.

At 1:35 PM, Blogger olr — 纪韶融 wrote ...

No, the basic problem here is that the translation doesn't match either way.
So what was first, the Cup's English or Chinese title?

Whoever organized that ImagineCup just can't put up 创新 instead and say 差不多. Not at Peking University.

I don't think it's a big deal. "Imagine" is overrated. BTW, is PKU really the 1st in Asia? I strongly doubt that.

One car come, one car go. Two car 'pengpeng', one car die."

I did already.

Hi Rick,

you are free to do so.

PKU's number 1 position was taken from the 2006 THES World University Rankings. This definitely varies depending on the source of reference, it is clear, though, that we are not talking about some provincial backwater school here.

P.S. I think Microsoft is overrated.
