I hope not.

"世界最大的体育盛宴即将爆发了" isn't supposed to be an anonymous bomb threat, but rather a happy announcement.

Two words are interesting:

sheng4yan4 盛宴 - feast
bao4fa1 爆发 - to explode, to erupt

This very modern and very Public Relations combination of a traditional "feast" with the rather aggressive "explode" leaves room for a lot of misinterpretations.

My rather uninspired suggestion:
"The world's biggest sports meeting is about to begin!"

Shot in 舟山 Zhoushan, 浙江 Zhejiang Province. Thanks, Kukuriku!

Hahaha! Great site. I just surfed in, I saw this URL in one of our national newspapers here in Holland, in an article about the olympics and the way the Chinese government tries to get some manners into their people ;-)

To me, the original chinese sentence "世界最大的体育盛宴即将爆发了" is incorrect. We never use such expressions in Chinese.

Therefore, don't blame the translator. He should be very much confused: translate an incorrect sentence into a native foreign one!! Think about his dilemma! When you read a wrong sentence in your mother language, you need to think it over again to cathc the true meaning, so it will be much harder for you to interpret it.

Maybe it's better to use 'Event' here: "The world's biggest sports event is about to begin! "?

There's nothing incorrect in the original Chinese sentence "世界最大的体育盛宴即将爆发了". This sort of Chinese is only bad, but not incorrect, and the meaning is clear enough for any disqualified translator. Brainless and tasteless expressions like this are loved by most Chinese in People's Republic of China(PRC). You may call it Chinese with Chinese Characteristics. The truly literate or the foreigners who know Chinese would never write like this.

begin = 開始, not 爆發

I think you have changed the original meaning of the sentence.

It is hard to translate the whole sentence word by word.

I INTENTIONALLY changed the meaning, since you obviously can't use "explode" in this sentence.

It is not only hard but also not necessarily the right thing to translate word by word...

「全球最大型體育盛事蓄勢待發」this is a good one. :)

No bad chinese sentence like "世界最大的体育盛宴即将爆发了", 体育盛宴 sounds a bomb. Only those foolish Mainlanders use such a rubbish chinese sentence, let alone talking about good english usage. It is a waste of time to discuss it indeed.

the sentence is not that coherent to me. I try to split it into single word with some modifications.
-> the biggest:big refers to describe tangible size, the biggest box,the biggest house..etc etc.
"最大"doesn't mean how big of the olympic game but how great.

-> meeting: i don't think this is proper word for "盛宴". "event" is one of the proper word for it.

-> blow up: it is absolutely misused.blow up means sth or sb destroyed or killed by bomb. it also means fill sth with air.

for this,i would like to reconstruct the sentence like this:

the greatest international multi-sport event is coming soon.

is it more natural?

What about this translation:

"The Game is about to begin"

It doesn't make sense in Chinese either.
