Almost.

At first it appears to be total gibberish, but looking at the subline twice identifies it as almost perfectly mirror-inverted, only that the letters aren't...

The question behind it all is - as usual - why?

美发 mei3fa4 - hair dressing

美容 mei3rong2 - beauty stuff, cosmetics

用品 yong4pin3 - items, products

Thanks go to Benedetto for this precious one!

Is it?

It doesn't really get much better than this ...

Taken at the north exit of the Forbidden City (Gugong) 故宫 in Beijing 北京.

Thanks, Charlene.

Where am I?

Taken in the Nanputuo Temple 南普陀寺曰 in Xiamen 厦门 Fujian 福建 Province.

I wish I could say the same about my condo pool ...

Thanks to my most vivid contributor Patricia in Beijing!

Back to work.

After the recent media exposure - I still get at least one reporter knocking on my virtual door a day - I return to what this site is all about, preserving the beloved beauty of Chinglish.

Irene has recently sent me this one from a "nice Sichuan restaurant at the corner of Chengdu Rd and Weihai Rd" in Shanghai 上海 .

Before someone starts complaining: There's nothing wrong with the piece.

夫妻 - fu1qi1 - man and wife

肺 - fei4 - lung

片 - pian4 - slice (in the meat 肉 rou4 context)

"What are you having? I think I'll go for the ..." Tasty.

Thanks Irene!

德国之声报告 - Deutsche Welle report

Interestingly enough the Chinese portal site 6park.com - in accordance with Deutsche Welle? - used their text and added some of my Chinglish pictures without asking. They even copied the whole blog header ;). Have a look and compare.

First contact.

To all my media colleagues,

I just want to apologize if I might not be reachable by phone that easily at the moment. I'm still right in the middle of settling down in Singapore with jetlag finally behind me. For all enquiries please use -- mail at olliradtke.de -- first and I'll get in touch with you as soon as possible (the time difference works for me).

Best,

olr.

In the spotlight - Wall Street Journal report

Surprise.

Chinglish.de was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal today, please cf. Mei Fong,
"Tired of Laughter, Beijing Gets Rid Of Bad Translations", Feb 05 2007.

I hope that makes more people realize that we should "put in all efforts 下力气" to archive as much of our beloved endangered species as possible before it'll be gone for good.

Cameras out, time's tickin' ...

Best,

olr.
